If you're from outside of Malaysia and you want to spend your holiday in Terengganu, below are some guidelines for you to get here.

By Air :

From Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
You can buy tickets from Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia, they provide daily flights from KLIA to Kuala Terengganu International Airport. The journey normally takes approximately 45 minutes.

If you wish to use Fireflies or Malindo Air services, you can get your ticket at Subang Airport (Kuala Lumpur). The flight journey from Subang to Kuala Terengganu is approximately 1 hour. Fireflies and Malindo Air also provide daily flight from Subang Airport to Kuala Terengganu.

By Bus:

You can get bus ticket to Kuala Terengganu from almost every main bus stations around Malaysia

The approximate hours to reach Kuala Terengganu from some main cities can be seen below:

  • Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu (6 to 7 hours)
  • Johor Bharu to Kuala Terengganu (9 hours)
  • Penang to Kuala Terengganu (9 hours)
In some ticket counters, you can also get ticket that take you directly to your destination around Terengganu. For example, if you want to go to Pulau Perhentian, you can buy ticket to Kuala Besut. You can get this from the counter.

Just ask anyone at the counters for more information, they are glad to help you.

These are some tips for you if you're travelling by bus:
  • The journey normally include rest stops for foods, refreshments and toilet stops.
  • Sometimes, the passengers on the same bus as you will get off earlier than you/ before you reach your destination. The driver normally will announce the place name. 
  • Be alert and dont missed your destination. If you missed the announcement, don't get panic. Just ask the driver about your location at the moment and when will you reach your destination.
  • If you are travelling by bus overnight, bring some warm clothing because it can be quite cold. You can also bring small pillow to help you sleep comfortably.

By Train

There is no train service available in Terengganu thus you cannot reach Kuala Terengganu if you are using train. But if you wish to go to the north part of Terengganu to go to Pulau Perhentian in District Besut, you can use Keretapi Tanah Melayu train (KTM). 

KTM offer service from Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru/ Singapore to Tanah Merah, Wakaf Bahru and Tumpat in Kelantan. You can stop at Tanah Merah station as it is the nearest stop to Kuala Besut jetty (jetty to Pulau Perhentian).

By Car/ Self Drive

Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu (approximate distance is 451 km) : via coastal road expressway
  • Highway KL (Gombak Toll) on Karak Highway and continue with East Coast Expressway (Local name for ECE is Lebuhraya Pantai Timur) to Kuantan exit.
  • Highway Kuantan exit to Kuala Terengganu (Coastal road to Kemaman, Dungun and Kuala Terengganu, approx. 223km)
Approximate journey time is 5 hours.


Penang to Kuala Terengganu  (approximate distance is 444 km):
  • Highway 4 Penang on the East West Highway via Grik to Jertih
  • Highway 3 Jertih to Kuala Terengganu 
  • Approximate time is 6 hours
Other route options are:
  • Via North-South Expressway/AH2/E1 and Route 185 (7 hours, 526 km)
  • Via North-South Expressway/AH2/E1 and E8 (8 hours, 755km)


Car Parks are available at most of Jetties in Terengganu. You can find car parks at Merang Jetty (Redang Island/Lang Tengah Island), Marang Jetty (Kapas Island), Kuala Besut Jetty (Perhentian Island), Gawi Jetty (Kenyir Lake) and Kenyir Dam (Kenyir Houseboat).
